Rounding the Bases

While DC offers many spring sports options for students, one of the most popular and historic traditions is certainly baseball. This year, the Knights look to stay strong despite the loss of many seniors. Although the Knights are just 3-7 so far, they look to round into good form in the month of April.
Mr. Jeff Wisnewski, who is head coach and high school history teacher has been leading the team for over two decades. Coach Wisnewski commented on the inherent difficulties of the sport: “Baseball can be a hard sport mentally because it can be so hard to find success. We have some challenging games ahead, and I look forward to seeing what the boys can do!”
Mr. Wisnewski also remarked on the spiritual dimensions of the sport at DC: “I think God is reminding us that we should first and foremost play for Him and then, second, for our teammates. Baseball is a great team sport with individual elements within it. Each of us doing our part to the best of our ability should help us be successful on the field, as individuals and as a team.”
Senior Sam Dixon, one of the squad’s standout performers, regards one’s mindset as a key to success: “I think just staying mentally tough and positive regardless of outcomes will be a big one, especially down the stretch as we face challenging opponents.” The communications prefect and starting quarterback currently has an on-base percentage of .667.
Some notable statistical leaders at this point include the Lyren brothers, senior Beau and sophomore Josey, who are both in the top three on the team in batting average. The older brother also leads the team in hits. On the mound, Beau also leads the team in strikeouts. Sophomore Matteo DeBellis leads the team in doubles and stolen bases.
As the Knights continue their season, they look to improve their 3-7 record as they prepare for the balance of their BAL season, which resumes against Renaissance Academy on April 22.
